Analysing
the social structures of the city through events has been an interest for
architects and urban designers. The developments in digital technology made
reaching great amount of data about urban environment fast and possible. The
data of events which take place in the urban environment such as time and
location of the event and the number of people who attend the event can be reached
through digital information technology. The internet and new applications like
Eventbrite (uk and us), Skiddle (us), Lavarla(Ankara) and Meetup (Ankara) gives information about
the events that take place in specific locations and allow us to uncover the
temporal activity patterns in the urban environment. Mapping is a strategic act
for this research, as a technique to give a meaning to this great amount of
information by visualization and as a theory to criticize the opportunities it
provides. In this scope, the aim of the paper is to evaluate the current
examples of mapping as a technique and web data as a source to make the rhythm
of events more visible to have a better understanding of the character of the
urban environment through human activity. In other words this study, based on
the contemporary mapping theory and techniques, elaborates the visualization of
time, space and activity relationship using publicly available online data to
contemplate urban identity.
