Utilizing Family Occupational Histories: How First-Generation University Students in Türkiye Interpret Intergenerational Influence on Career Planning

Özet
This study examined how first-generation university students (FGS) understand influence of their family occupational backgrounds on their career planning. Nineteen senior FGS in western Türkiye constructed career genograms and wrote reflective narratives, analyzed using thematic analyses. Results showed that families were simultaneously sources of support and constraint. Some participants internalized family values as motivation, while others negotiated career choices between personal goals and familial expectations. Extended family members and gendered role models also influenced participants’ career decisions. Many students developed autonomy and self-direction in the absence of direct influence. Results are discussed within the framework of Social Cognitive Career Theory.
