Influence of Binder Source, Additives, and Aging on the Chemical and Low-Temperature Properties of Warm Mix Asphalt Binders

Low-temperature cracking resistance in asphalt pavements is strongly governed by the chemical composition of binder. This study examines the combined effect of binder sources and warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additives on the chemical and low-temperature properties of WMA binders. Two binders with the same penetration and performance grades from different sources were modified using common organic and chemical additives. The chemical properties of six base and modified binders were analyzed using weight-based SARA fractionation and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) under unaged, short-term, and long-term aged conditions, while low-temperature rheological behavior was evaluated with the 4-mm dynamic shear rheometer. Results indicated that the influence of additives on performance grade varied with binder source, and asphaltene content alone was not a reliable indicator of low-temperature stiffness. Both additives reduced aging indices and stiffness, though effects differed by binder source. These results highlight the complex interactions among binder chemistry, additive type, and aging.
