Özet:

On the basis of the data elicited through a Questionnaire which was applied to METU Freshman students of Philosophy and a Structured Interview which was conducted with instructors in the Departments of Philosophy and Modern Languages, this thesis primarily aims at trying to define the factors which make the skill of summary writing in English as a Foreign Language a complex one for the students in question. This study then aims at suggesting different ways of teaching the summary writing skill to these students by presenting to them various types of material which are devised to make the summaries that students write more effective.
