Cultures and functional relations: the evolution of the urban morphology of the city of izmir in 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries
Meeting place between east and west, izmir is the second most important port city of the ottoman empire in the 19th century. The economic reorganization brings about important transformations in the socio-economic structure of the city at this period. While new strucutres are being set up and certain social groups gain power, traditional structures become secondary : a socio-economic duality appear in city's structures. The socio-economic change comes along with the metamorphosis of the urban space : the construction of the port and the railways will make an important impact on the physical structure of the city. While the urban growth becomes very important, the modes of space production defining new development areas change totally. The old center of the city will also be subject to important urban projects. The study of these structural transformations of the urban space and particularly that of the relationships between the evolution of social and spatial forms of the city of izmir at that period, constitutes the object of this present research which is principally based on a morphological analysis of urban forms from a series of historical plans representing the evolution of the city of izmir. The research tends to restitute the principles of the spatial composition, the logic behind the urban forms, as well as to question the relations of these with the forms of social organization and functional relationships that define the city of izmir, in order to grasp the logic of its spatial transformation.
