Over the past years, large-scale disasters have caused enormous loss of life and property as well as widespread damage to the cultural heritage across the globe. In the future, changes in temperature and precipitation patterns due to climate change may lead to the occurrence of extreme floods, sea-level rise, and forest fires. In Turkey, natural and climate-related hazards threaten settlements as well as cultural heritage, in both its tangible and intangible manifestations.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of disaster risk management, efforts in reducing disaster risk involve many disciplines and can be seen from many perspectives. From the cultural heritage conservation perspective, the increased vulnerability and exposure of cultural heritage to these natural and climate-related hazards and potential scenarios will impact cultural heritages in the future. There is a need for a specialized approach to disaster risk management of cultural heritage due to the necessity of taking into account the specific characteristics, values, and vulnerabilities of cultural heritage.

This course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts, principles, and stages of disaster risk management of cultural heritage. Students will accumulate knowledge and experiences to be able to carry out first-level vulnerability and risk assessments, and to formulate risk reduction goals and strategies for cultural heritage buildings/sites.
