This course covers some key issues in contemporary discussions around decoloniality. Focusing especially on the works by thinkers from the Caribbean, African, and Latin American diaspora and beyond, we shall inquire into some groundbreaking critiques of modernity, Eurocentrism, and globalization, as well as critical theories of race, gender, class, and nationality within the context of postcolonialism. Beginning with distinctions between colonialism and coloniality, and between postcolonialism and decoloniality, we shall examine the global repercussions of the operations of the coloniality of power and knowledge and “the constitutive outsides” of western thought. We shall explore the possibilities of decolonial epistemologies as well as world philosophies based on genuine dialogue.
