Course Description and Objectives: This is the first of a two-semester class on the history of wars, weapons, armies and military science throughout history. In this semester general information on the field of military history, military terminology and map symbols will be given, then the development of arms and armies from ancient times to the 18th century will be covered.
Course Requirements and Methodology: Students are expected to attend classes and come to class havıng read and studıed the assıgned texts, as both theoretical and practical work will be carried out in class. Methodology will include not only lectures, but also class discussion and therefore class participation will be taken into serıous consideration in the final assessment.
Classes start at the scheduled time. If you are more than 10 minutes late for class, DO NOT enter the classroom; wait until the next session begins.
Assessment: Grades are based on the results of a mid-term and final exam. The mid-term exam is 40% of the final grade and the final exam is 60%.
Make-up exams are only given for medical reasons (rapor required!) or scheduling conflicts with another department (requires a signed note from the department stating the time and date of their exam!). More than one exam on the same day, lack of preparation etc. are NOT acceptable excuses.
Course Materials: There is a packet of readings available at the photocopy center in the Library for this course. In addition, there will be a number of books and articles in electronic format available for downloading. Reading assignments for the class can be found in the course outline.
