The course offered is a review of the physicochemical properties of biomass; fundamentals of solid fuel combustion; biomass energy conversion technologies; environmental impact of biomass energy conversion.
The course
aims to provide students the fundamentals of biomass properties, handling, and
combustion, with a strong emphasis on applications.
At the end
of this course, the student will
1. be able
to classify biomass feedstock based on its properties and determine the
appropriate handling procedures;
2.
understand the fundamental processing routes for the utilization of biomass
such as torrefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification.
3. know the
fundamentals of solid fuel combustion;
4. be
familiar with different biomass technologies for heat and electricity
production;
5. know the
environmental impacts of biomass combustion due to the production of ash and
the emission of greenhouse gases emissions, NOx, SOx, and
particulate matter, and technologies to reduce these impacts;
6. become familiar with the ongoing research and the most pressing
research needs on biomass combustion and co-firing with an emphasis on biomass
sustainability and circular economy.
