This course is designed to introduce students to themes and issues related to on-going processes in contemporary Indian society. Since the colonial past continues to be of immense relevance for Indian modernity, the first half of the course focuses on India’s colonial history, and frameworks that were put in place during colonial rule. Ranging from specific understandings about land, caste, religion and politics that emerged during this period, the course will trace the growth of ideas of nationalism and forces that led to the partition of the subcontinent.

In the second half of the course, through a focus on a variety of administrative, social, economic and political, challenges that have confronted the Indian nation since 1947, a broad outline of post-Independence India will be mapped. The course draws on salient texts from the fields of history, anthropology and political science and sources such as films, speeches, biographies, ethnography and fiction. Each theme in the second half of the course constitutes a rich discursive field. Our aim will be to locate readings within the contestations and richness of debates surrounding them.
