This course is a general introduction to Far Eastern Art from the prehistoric period to the present with special emphasis on China, Korea, and Japan. By showing specific artifacts such as architecture, paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts. Students would get a ‘snap shot’ of particular historical moments of Asia (and the world). We will also examine not only the regional art expressions but also the mutual influences and cross-cultural artistic flows.
The approach is combining lecturing and inviting artist guest lecturers to the class. Students will explore and practice some artistic work such as Chinese calligraphy and music instruments in the class and will develop to have a basic understanding and interpreting of religion, social, aesthetic, and technical factors of Far Eastern art.
