This course
investigates Seljuk architecture in Anatolia (11-14th c.) in terms
of its form, style, building typology, meanings, regional characteristics,
social and political background and landscape. Urban and architectural
inheritance of the Pre-Seljuk Anatolia is also surveyed to display local
precedents. Neighbouring architectural traditions are also given in a similar
fashion. Seljuk architecture is then analyzed in relation to its precursors and
coevals. The course specifically focuses upon encounters, transformations and
contributions of Seljuk architecture in Anatolia. The
course includes a series of lectures by the instructor and student
presentations. It is designed for architectural history graduate students.
Graduate students from other departments might be accepted on the condition that
they either study similar topics in their graduate program or completed any
art/architectural history survey course.
