Today creative mapping is being
discussed and applied in a wide spectrum of fields including literature and
cinema besides architecture and planning. In the context of cities, mapping emerges
as an agent for both the revelation and the re-conceptualisation of urban
space. Considering also its role in determining the context and the concept,
and thus in preparing for decision upon space, mapping inevitably emerges as
‘design’.
The course involves architectural
and urban design in complex urban environments using mapping techniques.
Readings and discussion on examples from the world are included for introducing
the theory and the role / use of mapping in architectural and urban design. Students are expected
to use and develop mapping techniques and apply them as means
and medium of designing (in) the contemporary city.
