    This course is an introduction to the inclusive education and will include discussions about the foundational knowledge about the sociology and philosophy of inclusive education; the relation between democratic education, inclusive education and marginalized groups in society; the effects of schooling on the reproduction of (un)equality in society; major sociological themes such as difference, power, equality, marginalization, discrimination, stereotypes, privilege, ability/ableism etc.; questioning the ideology of normalcy; effective teacher characteristics/positions for inclusive education; and the current issues in inclusive and democratic education. Over the course of the term, while we are engaging in an understanding of the basic concepts related to inclusive education, we will visit and revisit some major issues in this field:

     

    §  explain the functions of schools in society with a special focus on democratic education and inclusive education,

     

    §  explain the fundamental concepts of inclusive education,

    §  describe the effects of schooling on the reproduction of (un)equality in society,

     

    §  describe the major sociological themes related to inclusive education such as difference, power, equality, marginalization, discrimination, stereotypes, privilege, ability etc.,

     

    §  explain the current status of the teaching profession in teaching and instruction for inclusion,

     

    develop a critical understanding of and interest in the teaching profession
