This course explores urban spaces in the Ottoman Empire from the end of the “Classical Age” to the Second Constitutional Era (1908) through historical, social, and theoretical perspectives. Focusing on critical engagement with primary sources such as court records and waqf (endowment) documents alongside secondary literature, students will investigate how urban spaces were organized, maintained, and experienced. We will examine the legal, economic, and social structures that influenced urban life and governance, the relationship between the state and urban communities, and how urban spaces were negotiated. Key themes include coexistence and segregation in multi-ethnic and multi-religious urban areas, the role of property and property regimes in relation to cities, and the evolving nature of public and private spaces over time. Students will work with primary sources, engage in scholarly debates, and compare different perspectives to develop a comprehensive understanding of Ottoman urban life.
