1. Introduction to the course objectives and scope. Basics of groundwater flow and surface-water flow processes. Baseflow separation (manual and automated). (1 week)
2. Geologic, landscape and climate controls on groundwater surface-water interaction. Equipotential lines and flow lines, local, regional flow systems. (1 week)
3. Soil water content, soil water retention and potential (Hydrostatics). Soil water retention characteristic curves and hysteresis. Estimation of characteristics curves, Pedotransfer functions. (1 week)
4. Darcy’s Law in unsaturated zone;Unsaturated steady state flow; unsaturated hydraulic conductivity models and applications. (1 week)
5. Unsaturated transient flow and Richard’s equation; approximate solutions to infiltration (Green Ampt and Philip equations). (1 week)
6. Energy balance and Land Atmosphere interactions. Radiation and energy balance; evapotranspiration definitions and estimation, surface evaporation, soil root zone processes, riparian processes. (1 week)
