Among the topics that will be examined are the Central Asian origins of the Seljuqs; their conversion to Sunni Islam and its historical significance; the rise of the Great Seljuqs and their westward expansion through the time of Alp Arslan; the emergence of the Seljuqs of Rum; Seljuq relations with Byzantium, the Crusaders, the Danişmendler, and the Italian maritime republics; culture and religion in Anatolia under the Seljuqs; the decline of Seljuq power under the Mongols; the cultural and religious transformation of Anatolia; and the legacy of the Seljuqs of Rum.

Course Requirements and Methodology: Students are required to attend at least 80% of classes and come to class havıng read and studıed the assıgned texts, as both theoretical and practical work will be carried out in class. Methodology will include not only lectures, but also class discussion and therefore class participation will be taken into serıous consideration in the final assessment.

Assessment: There will be a mid-term and a final exam. The mid-term exam will be worth 50% and the final exam is the other 50% of the total grade.

Make-up exams are only given for medical reasons (rapor required!) or scheduling conflicts with another department (requires a signed note from the department stating the time and date of their exam!). More than one exam on the same day, lack of preparation etc. are NOT acceptable excuses.
