This course aims to
introduce students to critical issues and sources on Ottoman history from the
15th to the beginning of the 18th century. Building upon research based on
Ottoman state archives and using recent historiographical methodology on
Ottoman history, the course analyses key themes, works, ideas and people on
early modern Ottoman empire.
There will be two main
sections; “Historiography” and “Sources”. In the “Historiography” section,
Ottoman historiographical tradition from the formation of the Ottoman state till
the beginning of the nineteenth century will be analysed. In this section, a
short introduction will be presented on the characteristic features of some of
the archival sources regarding paleography and diplomatics. In the “Sources”
section, the archive collections, such as Başbakanlık
and National Archives, UK, and libraries will be introduced. In a seperate
lecture, Ottoman chronicles and history writers as well as European travel
writing literature will be analysed. Seperate lectures will be devoted to
Ottoman primary sources such as, Şeriyye
Sicilleri, Tereke, Tapu Tahrir, Cizye/Avarız and Mühimme-Ahkam Defterleri.
