Introduction to legal requirements for tailings and effluent disposal. Characterization of tailings. Tailings disposal methods. Tailings embankment design. Effluent treatment methods, acid mine drainage management.
    (Prerequisites, consent of the instructor)
    Course Objectives:
    1. Know the legal frame of tailings and effluent disposal
    2. Propose a safe disposal method  tailings and the site of a tailings dam
    3. Evaluate tailings for acid rock drainage potential
    4. Know effluent and acid rock drainage (ARD) treatment methods

    Course Outcomes:

1.1 Find related legal requirements for tailings and effluent disposal.
1.2 Describe the characteristics of tailings and effluent.
1.3 Classify tailings and effluent according to their hazard potential.
2.1 Name the main tailings disposal methods and layout.
2.2 Assess the stability of tailings impoundments.
2.3 Estimate water balance and seepage, choose a seepage control method.
2.4 Propose disposal methods and sites for given tailings.
3.1 Describe the acid production mechanism by tailings.
3.2 Estimate acid production/neutralization potential of tailings.
4.1 Name the main treatment methods for effluents.
4.2 Explain how ARD can be prevented and/or handled.
