Since culture mediates all human conduct, this course uncovers the bearing it has on everyday life with particular emphasis on the investigative process of mediation through which “meanings” are selected and organized. Since cultural beliefs, value systems, notions of identity vary from place to place and over time, this course examines the utility of the concept…not merely in illuminating remote societies but also how people produce, inhabit and make sense of a globalized world.

The course offers a selection of readings from diverse locations and foci.  In addition to learning how to write about culture, the “work” it does, as well as the theoretical and comparative perspectives it offers, the course will focus on how the concept has enhanced understandings about identity, exchange, emotion and language. Each week's readings will throw light on an innovative approach to understanding culture. While the selections illuminate particular contexts, they are intended to force reflection on the craft of Anthropology.
