This course focuses on the importance of the "other" in the emergence of the discipline of Social Anthropology. Besides introducing some significant thinkers whose work illuminates this evolving focus, the course will seek to chart how the concept has shaped the discipline's concerns and methods. This course is as much about culture as about the debates and perspectives about the "other".

Far from seeing cultures as self-contained wholes, we locate them in contexts of their economic interconnections and interdependence. We shall examine what makes for cultural distinctiveness despite the forces of capitalist expansion, colonialism, and strategies of effacement. In moving away from notions of spatially bounded cultures, this course takes as a given that cultural difference is historically produced in shared and connected spaces, within given fields of power relations.

This course is intended to benefit graduate students of Sociology as well as Anthropology. It will help students cultivate an inter-disciplinary outlook, forcing reflection on Anthropology’s relatedness with fields across the humanities and social sciences.
