Özet

Expansion of swelling clays leads to damages of the transportation and/or lightweight structures which are settled on that kind of subsoils. Expansive soils can be improved by adding chemical stabilizers such as lime. In this study, soil samples that are extremely highly plastic have been taken from clay deposits of Ankara in Turkey. Lime has been used as a chemical stabilizer. Firstly, the tests for physical and index properties have been conducted. Then the clay is mixed with the lime at different percentages of dry weight of the soil and engineering properties of the improved soil samples have been determined. The methylene blue tests have been carried out. Activity, methylene blue and swelling properties of the soil samples have been found. The 7% lime content is found to be quite effective for the decrease of methylene blue value and activity. This result is more or less compatible with the swell percentage results.
