Social media has changed our world in every aspect. While social media enriches our lives by providing entertainment, information sharing, games and communication with people from all over the world, it can turn into a social problem, especially for university students. When students cannot control their social media use, they may face negative consequences in daily life. This situation is expressed as “Problematic Social Media Use” in the literature. The aim of this article is to examine problematic social media use in terms of various variables (gender, age, education level, annual use and daily use). In the study, the survey model was used from quantitative designs. The study group was determined by convenience sampling method. The study group consist of 507 students who are studying at associate and undergraduate education levels in different departments at Amasya University. The data were collected with the Demographic Information Form and Social Media Disorder Scale. SPSS 25 program was used in the data analysis. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and t-test for independent samples. As a result of the analysis, it was found that women use social media more than men. Students between the ages of 18–25 use social media more than other age groups. In the research, it was found that students are at different levels of education does not affect the problematic social media use. Students who have been using social media for 6–8 years were found to have higher problematic social media use than others. In addition, students with daily social media use of 6 hours or more were determined to have higher problematic social media use than others. In the light of these findings, the demographic characteristics of a certain group with problematic social media use were revealed. It is thought that the study will contribute to raising awareness about problematic social media use, especially among young people.
