Abstract

This article aims to review the literature on the link between urban environment and childhood asthma with the outdoor air quality as the intervening variable. Our systematic literature review of 234 articles in Scopus, WOS, and PubMed databases returned 51 relevant research articles. Findings show that particular environments have detrimental effects on outdoor air quality, which in turn have a negative impact on childhood asthma. A larger number of studies focused on the relationship between traffic-related air pollution and childhood asthma. The results of this review inform researchers about the gaps in the literature and outline recommendations for future research.
