The ‘Rainwater Harvesting for Climate Change Adaptation: Training Programme for Municipalities’ project aims to develop and deliver an experience-based training programme to equip municipalities in Türkiye with the knowledge and resources to implement sustainable rainwater harvesting, a crucial method for addressing urban climate change-driven challenges such as droughts and floods.
The need for this project emerged from the BIAA-led, British Academy-funded ‘Water in Istanbul: Rising to the Challenge?’ project, which aimed to understand how past authorities responded to water-related challenges and draw lessons applicable to contemporary climate and water scarcity-related questions. Four participatory knowledge-generation workshops brought more than 100 municipal stakeholders together to co-define contemporary water and climate change-related challenges and propose appropriate solutions. One of the urgent needs identified was for a training programme on developing and implementing sustainable rainwater harvesting (RWH), as this was acknowledged to be one of the most salient methods of adapting to climate change. The BIAA conducted additional research with Kadıköy Municipality to better-understand the specific training needs of municipal staff, and this project was developed based on the outcomes of this stakeholder consultation.
