The Black Sea is one of the most polluted seas in Europe and one of the regions hit hardest by COVID-19. Most Black Sea countries have experienced a severe economic impact due to lost jobs, business closures and disrupted international trade. In this context, restoring and diversifying countries’ economies beyond land-based activities and along their coasts and watershed could be critical to go back to the path of the shared prosperity and delivering -again- smart, sustainable and inclusive growth globally.
The proposed activity funded by the grant will be to conduct a feasibility study that will analyze trends and opportunities to provide employment through a "blue-wager” program for the Black Sea. Since the Black Sea coast of Turkey is one of the hardest hit by COVID, the study will focus on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, as a case study, to be scaled up and replicated in other Black Sea Countries, through the World Bank Bluing the Black Sea Program (BBSEA). The World Bank BBSEA regional program is an “Umbrella Program” serving as a glue among various investments projects, analytical work, trust-fund and partnerships. The objective of the BBSEA program is: to improve the environmental health of the Black Sea while increasing the available social and economic benefits to the surrounding populations.
