Global Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery Program

Developing methods for disaster prevention, disaster risk reduction, and prompt restoration after the occurrence of a disaster to something better than before, so-called Build-back Better, is highly focused in the fields of disaster prevention and risk reduction with the concept of developing resilience toward disasters in the society.

A Project-Based Learning (PBL) program focuses on creating a risk map for potential damage to preservation areas; comparison of basic technology in Business Continuity Plan (BCP) between both countries; and the new technology plans from a new perspective in addition to traditional studies on landslide disaster in earthquakes and heavy rain. The program also aims to create a hazard map for flood damage based on geographical features and geology.

Participating students will particularly focus on tradition and technology to preserve farms and residential lands in Chuetsu Area in Niigata Prefecture and traditional indigenous engineering of both countries. These are considered important strategies to actualize inexpensive but effective technology to prevent and reduce disasters.
