Proje Özeti

Turnover is a natural phenomenon that results in complete mixing in stratified lakes and reservoirs mostly due to the elimination of water temperature difference between upper and lower layers. In eutrophic water bodies, it may result in low dissolved oxygen levels across the lake as lower layers can be anoxic. Since restoration of dissolved oxygen to suitable levels could take some time, aquatic species deaths can be observed. A turnover may have significant environmental and socio-economic impacts. For instance, fish farmers can greatly be impacted by loss of fish, aquatic ecosystems can be disturbed, odour and water quality problems may occur. In September 2011, millions of small fish died in 3 days in Lake Eymir and Mogan Lake due to turnover. Similar examples can be found in the literature and news in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Denmark,India, Romania, Philippines, USA, etc. If precautions can be taken, such as providing in-situ aeration, aquatic life can be sustained during a turnover.

This project aims to develop a cost-efficient real-time monitoring and action system to minimize aquatic species deaths due to abrupt changes in oxygen levels in lakes and reservoirs due to turnover. In this system a turnover response model is proposed which would obtain real-time data from field, make an assessment and initiate the aerators to eliminate the conditions leading to fish kills. The model will make estimations by interpreting the changes in water quality parameters acquired from sensors. The developed model will be integrated in an autonomous aeration system to mitigate negative effects when turnover occurs. The system will be implemented at Lake Eymir which has been significantly impacted by turnover in the past. However, the system will be generic and flexible for application in other water bodies in Turkey and in other countries.
