Proje Özeti

It is indisputable that the children of immigrants of Turkish origin living in Germany are now in the 4th generation, that they have grown up bilingual, and that they constitute a very suitable group for researching the bilingual mind and collecting new findings due to their large number. Although these immigrant children have language problems in Germany, the contribution of bilingual upbringing to cognitive abilities should not be overlooked. The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to analyse the different dimensions of bilingualism and to examine the effect of bilingualism on cognitive abilities, which has been little researched in this field. The contribution of bilingual upbringing to cognitive abilities has not yet been evaluated either by educators or by education policy makers. In order to realise this aim, the functions of the bilingual mind in both healthy and speech impaired bilinguals will be investigated by using psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics methods and the contribution of bilingualism to cognitive abilities will be determined.
