Proje Özeti

Considering the status of cetaceans as umbrella species in the ecosystem and top predators in the marine food web, a dedicated section on cetaceans and the need to ensure their conservation in the North-eastern Mediterranean Sea will be included into existing marine environmental awareness programme entitled 'I Know and Protect my Seas'. The voluntary training programme run by the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Middle East Technical University in Turkey teaches middle school students (10-13yrs) non-curricular marine environmental issues to raise knowledge and awareness of the urgent need to protect biodiversity of the marine environment and endangered marine species (such as whales and dolphins, the endemic but critically endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal, marine turtles, sand lilies etc.). The half-day programme incorporates presentations, videos, ecosystem game and ‘hands-on’ mini-workshop.
