Abstract:Urban residential environments in Turkey from 1965 onwards are formed through the application of the detached apartment block In satellite towns, the point block dominates the housing environment. The prospect this type provides in formation of the public realm, variety of plan layouts for diverse occupants, is of vital importance and an issue of inquiry. This study aims at re-thinking the apartment block in Turkey, [its transformation from Kiraevi to the anonymous block, through the examples of two cases from Çankaya, Ankara and Ataköy, Istanbul. Housing layouts from the selected European cases of the inter-war period and present day ("70s- 90s) are studied to compare and identify the merits of planning approaches in housing design practice. Siedlung experiments of the inter-war period provide the generic mass housing layouts. A specific layout 'perimeter block' which existed in Siedlung Experiments is further explored. Its generic pattern 'the courtyard apartment' of late 18th century iiiParis and istanbul is reviewed. The European post-war housing design focusing on the theme of perimeter block design will be studied through selected case studies. Finally, design issues related to perimeter block will be discussed. Housing morphology in terms of land use, population density requirements, in Çankaya and Ataköy cases, is compared with the values obtained in perimeter block cases. Perimeter block design is capable of meeting the market demands. However its application in architectural practice necessitates a revision of the dominant land subdivision in Turkey, towards a provision which will facilitate the formation of distinct housing layouts.
