Abstract:Architectural competition is a method of procuring the best possible design among a number of entries for a specific site. Deficiencies in the execution of the competition process may result in implementation problems in the winning entry; forcing it to undergo transformations that deprive it from its defining characteristics or not materialize. This has been an issue of debate in the contemporary Turkish architectural scene with the poor results obtained affecting usage frequency of competitions. The study is composed of three parts. The first part analyzes organizational procedures of an architectural competition while dividing the competition process into three sequential parts for simplification; pre competition, preparation & evaluation, post competition. The second part highlights problems encountered throughout this continuum while revealing the time phase of their appearance and the actors associated with them. Alongside suggestions made by local architects; comparative analysis with various European architecture scenes was made to enrich the number of possible solutions. The data obtained was merged to create a questionnaire that can either be used to surface problems of any past competition or verify the legitimacy of a possible competition to ensure it would proceed without issues. The third part includes the evaluation of six contemporary Turkish competitions to reveal their problematics while displaying applicability of the survey. The aim of the study is to understand the problems of architectural competitions in Turkey and establish a framework and a guideline towards eliminating the problems to ensure the quality of architectural production and the physical environment.
