Özet:

Climate change has been proven largely to be a consequence of human activities and has a destructive impact on ecosystems. Societies and economies have become a growing global concern for the last few years and the building industry has a key role in this change due to its huge amount of environmental footprint. The energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions of the built environment influence the climate in a negative way while the changing climate also influences the energy and thermal performance of the built environment and comfort and health of users. In this thesis, architectural design strategies for existing buildings that aim for climate change mitigation and adaptation are explored using research through design and a simulation-based quantitative approach is adopted. A design method is proposed in order to reduce the reciprocal influence of the built environment and climate change. The method is implemented in an educational building in Ankara by the aim of testing and verification. The aim is to evaluate the impacts of climate change predictions together with urban heat island effect on energy and thermal performance of existing buildings and to improve the performance of buildings through dynamic energy simulation software and passive architectural design techniques. The main contribution of the thesis is to understand the effects and interactions of different design alternatives on the building performance and to develop the most effective and feasible design approach which can support the designers throughout the design processes for climate resilience in existing buildings.
