Abstract:This thesis examines Japan’s security policy, with particular focus on relations with East Asian countries and the US, especially consider the policy changes in security from pacifism to proactive. More specifically, it presents an overview of the transformation of Japan’s security policy in response to the change in the security environment in East Asia, particularly North Korea’s military development and the rise in China’s power and the role of Unites States in the region. For this purpose, the thesis pays particular attention to change in the content of its basic policy document, the National Defense Program Guidelines (NDPG), compiled in 1976 and subsequently revised five times, in 1995, 2004, 2010, 2013 and 2018
